Swallowing, both nutritive and non-nutritive, is highly dysfunctional in children with Leigh Syndrome (LS) and contributes to the need for both gastrostomy and tracheostomy tube placement. Without these interventions aspiration of food, liquid, and mucus occur resulting in repeated bouts of respiratory infection. No study has investigated whether mouse models of LS, a neurometabolic disorder, exhibit dysfunctions in neuromuscular activity of swallow and breathing integration. We used a genetic...

Enrolling adequate numbers of patients into the control arm of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) often presents barriers. There is interest in leveraging real-world data (RWD) from electronic health records (EHRs) to construct external control (EC) arms to supplement RCT control arms and form hybrid control (HC) arms. This investigation showed the use of an HC arm in second-line metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The RCT experimental arm (atezolizumab + PEGylated recombinant...

CONCLUSIONS: The highest anticholinergic exposure was associated with greater WMH burden. Future studies should focus on longitudinal changes of WMH burden to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying the link between anticholinergics and dementia risk.

Identifying population-level relationships between predators and their prey is often predicated on having reliable population estimates. Camera-trapping is effective for surveying terrestrial wildlife, but many species lack individually unique natural markings that are required for most abundance and density estimation methods. Analytical approaches have been developed for producing population estimates from camera-trap surveys of unmarked wildlife; however, most unmarked approaches have strict...

Background: Quantitative pupillometry has been proposed as an objective means to diagnose acute sports-related concussion (SRC). Objective: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of a smartphone-based quantitative pupillometer in the acute diagnosis of SRC. Methods: Division I college football players had baseline pupillometry including pupillary light reflex (PLR) parameters of maximum resting diameter, minimum diameter after light stimulus, percent change in pupil diameter, latency of pupil...

Restorative treatment is the most common approach to treating dental caries. However, after cavity preparation, some microorganisms may still persist in the substrate, suggesting the use of cavity disinfectants. Nevertheless, their effect on adhesion to composite resins is not yet fully understood, especially in primary teeth. The study aimed to assess the impact of five different cavity disinfectants on dentin adhesion in primary teeth. A total of 60 primary molars were uniformly flattened at...

Arachnoid granulations have been known for centuries yet remain incompletely understood. While traditionally associated with cerebrospinal fluid transport, the precise mechanism remains uncertain. This manuscript reviews the literature on the anatomy, histology, and imaging findings of arachnoid granulations and their mimickers and anomalous variations. We highlight variations in incidence, size, and characteristics of arachnoid granulations on imaging, and hypothesize that these variations may...

Recent studies have revealed a role for zinc in insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis. Randomized placebo-controlled zinc supplementation trials have demonstrated improved glycemic traits in patients with type II diabetes (T2D). Moreover, rare loss-of-function variants in the zinc efflux transporter SLC30A8 reduce T2D risk. Despite this accumulated evidence, a mechanistic understanding of how zinc influences systemic glucose homeostasis and consequently T2D risk remains unclear. To further...

CONCLUSIONS: This contemporary multicenter observational cohort study demonstrated that machine learning modeling strategies did not improve performance of the ETVSS model over logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of pediatric craniopharyngioma requires a multidisciplinary approach to counsel patients and families on the spectrum of treatment options, including biopsy, radiation, and/or resection. Gross-total resection can avoid radiation and its long-term comorbidities. In very young patients, this is of particular importance but is especially challenging because of anatomical considerations.

CONCLUSIONS: CTEPH is associated with acceptable short-term mortality and an improvement in pulmonary hemodynamics. With increasing volume of experience and ongoing developments over time peri-operative mortality continues to decrease.

CONCLUSIONS: PFD was associated with reduced operative time and blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and fewer postoperative complications within 6 months. However, PFDD was associated with better symptom improvement and reduction in syrinx size and lower rates of revision decompression. The two surgeries have low intraoperative complication rates and comparable complication rates beyond 6 months.

CONCLUSIONS: Angiogenin and its receptor, plexin-B2, are a pair of novel regulators that mediate invasion, vascular association and proliferation of glioblastoma cells. Inhibitors of the angiogenin-plexin-B2 axis have therapeutic potential against glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In pooled analyses of endarterectomy trials for symptomatic carotid stenosis, several subgroups experienced no net benefit from revascularization. The validated SCAIL score includes stenosis severity and inflammation measured by Positron-Emission Tomography (PET) and improves the identification of patients with recurrent stroke compared with lumen-stenosis alone. We investigated if the SCAIL score improves the identification of recurrent stroke in subgroups with...

Patients with fixed and dilated pupils (FDPs) due to rising intracranial pressure (ICP) typically experience a deterioration in consciousness. We describe an exceptional case of a patient with bifrontal contusions who developed worsening edema and a unilaterally FDP while maintaining consciousness and the ability to communicate. A 58-year-old man with history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus type II presented after being assaulted, with bifrontal contusions and right frontal...

CONCLUSIONS: The risk of rebleeding of a dural arteriovenous fistula with cortical venous drainage presenting with hemorrhage is increased in the first 2 weeks justifying early treatment. However, the magnitude of this increase may be considerably lower than previously thought. Treatment within 5 days was associated with a low rate of rebleeding and appears an appropriate timeframe.
